I believe his intent was solely to entertain his readers and sell his book. Americans love conspiracy theories and he played upon their interests. As far as history goes, you really don't have to know anything. Brown does a good job of explaining everything pretty well even if he elaborates on the details. Keep in mind that the book is mostly fiction with just a few proven historic details in it.
